Thurman Leroy Phelps, Sr., age 88, of McAlester, OK, passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Beare Manor Nursing Home, of Hartshorne, Oklahoma.
Thurman was born in Red Oak, Oklahoma on February 11, 1928, a son of the late Mryle (Carter) and David A. Phelps.
Thurman worked as a truck driver. He served in the U.S. Army in WW II. He was a member of the VFW #3649 of Wilburton, Oklahoma and a member of the DAV.
He was the widower of Edith Mae (Gill) Phelps. On December 22, 1945, they were married at Wilburton, Oklahoma.
Thurman is survived by:
Daughters/Son-In-Law: Thelma McCullough, of Union City, Oklahoma; Carolyn Coil, of Wilburton, Oklahoma; Mary & Dale Breeding, of Heavener, Oklahoma.
Sons/Daughters-In-Law: Walter & Betty Phelps, of McAlester, Oklahoma; Thurman Leroy & Jo Phelps, Jr., of Wilburton, Oklahoma; Ronald & Tedra Joan Phelps, of Wilburton, Oklahoma.
Sister/Brother-In-Law: Elsie & Cecil Anderson, of Duncan, Oklahoma.
Brothers/Sister-In-Law: Jerry & Sandy Phelps, of Comanche, Oklahoma; Wayne Phelps, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma.
Many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by 8 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great Great Grandchildren.
Thurman was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith Phelps; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; son, Raymond Edward Phelps; grandson, Billy Gene Phelps.
Service at Bob Waldrop Memorial Chapel, Wilburton, Oklahoma, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 with Rev. Randy Waldrop officiating. Interment to follow at the Damon Valley Cemetery, Wilburton, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers: Chad Swafford, Billy Don Evans, Leon Fry, Danny Evans, Eddie Muse, Larry Fite, Matt Chance, Raymond Kirk. Honorary Pallbearers: Glen Kendrick, Bill Christian, Pete Swafford, Bill Cecil, Jack Evans, Lester Carter.
